Designing an A.I. Powered App for Dementia Patients

In October 2024, I had the opportunity to participate in Fierce Foundry's FEMHACK hackathon over the course of a weekend to quickly create a working prototype to present to judges. I worked with a team of comprised of software engineers, data engineers, and business professionals to create a prototype for D.O.V.E (Dementia Oasis Virtual Engagement).

Overview

The idea of D.O.V.E came about from Alison Nail-Malone, an End-of-Life Doula with both work and personal experience in caring for those with dementia. D.O.V.E is a virtual app designed to enhance the quality of life for dementia patients and reduce stress for caregivers. It provides 24/7 access to companionship, personalized conversations, emotional support, and interactive activities, fostering meaningful connections. By offering constant support, it also helps alleviate strain on healthcare workers and systems.

The Challenge: How can we quickly create an app prototype for dementia patients and their caretakers that provides companionship and support?

Event: FEMHACK 2024

Product: D.O.V.E

Role: Product Designer

Duration: 15 Hours

Team: Myself, Business Owner/End of Life Doula, 2 Data Engineers, Software Engineer, and a Marketing Consultant

Outcome

The finished Fenceline application a web-based GIS tool that automatically generates field boundaries based on the location entered. Users can select and edit field boundaries, and export those boundaries with crop and soil data. Fenceline can be used on its own or be integrated directly within other agriculture applications. Before my time with Lofty ended, there were plans for this application to be integrated within a client application.
